San Diego city leaders celebrated the reopening of Kumeyaay Lake Campgrounds at Mission Trails Regional Park on Friday.
San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman used a bolt cutter to cut the locks from the gate of the closed campgrounds. The grounds were closed for nearly three years due to budget cuts. But the council reinstated $140,000 in the budget to help cover operating costs. Additional costs are covered by the daily $20 camping fee.
“The Kumeyaay Lake Campgrounds is an asset for all San Diegans where families can come and enjoy our beautiful open space and learn about the environment. The reopening of the campgrounds marks a great day for our city and community,” Sherman said.
San Diego Councilwoman Lorie Zapf said the campground is an investment in neighborhoods.
“Reopening this campground is a huge win for San Diegans. It is a great example of how the city can afford to invest in the neighborhood services we need when we have a council that streamlines and reforms how tax dollars are being spent at City Hall,” Zapf said.
Camping is open on weekends.
