The neonatal intensive care unit at UCSD holds its 14th annual reunion tomorrow at Mission Bay Park. Hundreds of former patients and their family members will celebrate with medical staff.
Taylor Mugg is the smallest baby ever cared for at UCSD's neonatal intensive care unit. She weighed 12 ounces when she was born premature 10 years ago.
Her father Eric says things were touch and go for a while.
"The first couple weeks that we had, we weren't sure if Taylor was still going to make it," recalls Eric Mugg. "I mean, seeing the size that she was, seeing that when she was born, her eyes were still fused together, she could still fit inside of my hand, her skin was really translucent."
But after five months in the unit, Taylor was released. Today she's a happy 10-year-old.
Taylor and her family will be among the hundreds expected at tomorrow's celebration.
The unit cares for about 600 infants every year.
