Three more cases of the measles were reported in San Diego County on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the region to 13.
The three people diagnosed with the disease traveled to Disneyland on Dec. 18 and were not vaccinated for the measles. Two have recovered but one remains isolated at home, according to the county's Health and Human Services Agency.
Health officials warned that others may have been exposed if they visited the following locations and times:
• Vista Community Clinic ,1000 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 16.
• Sprouts Farmers Market, 471 College Blvd., Oceanside, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 14.
• Albertsons, 7660 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 13.
• Phil’s BBQ, 579 Grand Ave., San Marcos, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 11.
• Regal Carlsbad 12, 2501 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 6.
• Ice-Plex Escondido, 555 N Tulip St., Escondido, from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 30.
“It is important for anyone who was at one of these locations during the specified dates and times to watch for symptoms and contact their health care provider by telephone first if they show any signs of the disease,” said Eric McDonald, medical director of the county's Epidemiology Program.
“People who have been vaccinated are well protected against measles, but anyone who has not been vaccinated, or who has not had the disease, should take steps now to obtain the shot so that they are protected from future exposures,” McDonald added.
Health officials recommend that people born in 1957 or after have documentation of at least one dose of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine or other evidence of immunity to measles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of the vaccine — the first at 12 months of age and the second between ages 4 to 6.
Complications from measles are more common in children younger than 5 and adults 20 and older, and can include diarrhea, ear infection and pneumonia. Death can occur from severe complications and the risk is higher among younger children and adults.
There is no treatment for measles. Bed rest, fluids and fever control are recommended. People with complications may need treatment for their specific problem.
The announcement of the three new cases in San Diego County comes after state health officials urged unvaccinated people to stay away from Disneyland where 42 measles cases have been linked.
