Hundreds of thousands in San Diego County have been laid off because of the COVID-19 pandemic and many of those out of work are looking for all the help they can get. On Sunday, a church in south San Diego held a food distribution to help meet that need.
“We have 30,000 lbs. of food and drinks, of toilet paper and 58,000 diapers that we’re giving out,” said, Ryan McFadden, pastor of South Hills Church, which is near the Paradise Hills neighborhood.
“We’re small, but we don’t want our size to determine our impact,” McFadden said.
It was with that thought in mind that the church partnered with other community organizations to give away food and other essentials to hundreds of families Sunday.
“We got here at 7 a.m. and there was about a hundred cars lined up which blows my mind,” McFadden said. “It just shows you that people are in need.”

The church has done other food distributions before, but this was the first in south San Diego.
“This is going to be a continuous thing,” McFadden said. “We want everyone in our community to know that when there is a need out there South Hills Church is going to be at the front lines providing that.”
The San Diego Dream Center donated the more than 50,000 diapers. McFadden said the event gave him and other members of the church a chance to meet members of their community for the first time.
“Everyone that’s coming by here today are just people in the community — 99% of them we’ve never seen, we’ve never met before until now,” McFadden said. “We have a motto that you find a need and you fill it — you find a hurt and you heal it — that’s what we live by.”
