The Italian government has introduced emergency legislation to allow the deportation of immigrants, even if they are citizens of other European Union countries.
Ministers say the measure is needed to deal with what they say is a crime wave among immigrants in Italy.
In particular, many Italians are pointing fingers at the more than a half-million Romanian immigrants, many of them gypsies, who are believed to have entered Italy since Romania joined the EU.
