Lt. Col. John Nagl helped write the book on military tactics in Iraq that has been credited for bringing some stability to region. It's called The US Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual.
In an article for Foreign Policy, Nagl writes that he believes lessons learned in Iraq could help the U.S. implement a "more creative and aggressive strategy" to stabilize Afghanistan.
