San Diego State University, will retire at the end of the year.  As a result, a nationwide search for a new general manager will begin immediately, the university announced today.

“Doug has been instrumental in establishing KPBS as a valuable resource for the San Diego region,” said SDSU President Stephen L. Weber.  “In the months to come, SDSU is committed to finding a new general manager who will continue the KPBS mission and its status as a top rated public broadcast station.

Myrland joined KPBS as the station's fourth general manager in 1993. During his tenure, KPBS 89.5FM has nearly doubled its audience and now stands alone as the most significant source of news in the San Diego radio landscape.  This proved true during the October 2007 wildfires when KPBS was on the air for nearly 80 continuous hours, many of those hours anchored by Myrland himself.

In addition, Myrland negotiated the agreement which brought the first English language public radio service to the residents of the Imperial Valley.

Serving the 27th largest U.S. television market and 17th radio market, KPBS-TV, Radio and kpbs.org are highly respected for quality educational and entertaining programming on topics such as art, culture, public affairs, and history – all free of commercial interruption.  KPBS is supported financially by San Diego State University, its underwriters, donors and 48,000 members.

The nationwide search will be conducted by NETA Consulting which recruits senior executives in the field of public broadcasting.
