Part One: Homeless Babies And Toddlers Endure Tough, Long Days On San Diego Streets
Under a $50,000 contract with the port, the Alpha Project will try to get homeless people off the streets over the next six months. The Alpha Project, which operates the city of San Diego's cold weather shelter, will also develop longer-term plans to deal with homelessness along the bay.
According to the port, the number of homeless people along the waterfront is increasing, based on police calls for service, tidelands maintenance and homeless census counts.
A contract signing ceremony is scheduled for noon at Ruocco Park next to Tuna Harbor.
The port administers San Diego Bay and adjacent waterfront in Chula Vista, Coronado, Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego.
