SACRA/PROFANA presents "Local Connections"
Music
Local professional vocal ensemble SACRA/PROFANA presents "Local Connections," a choral music concert that has its roots in San Diego music.
There will be works by composer Benjamin Britten, who lived in Escondido to escape the violence of World War II; renowned conductor Robert Shaw who worked as the music director of the San Diego Symphony; and Matt McBane, founder and director of the Carlsbad Music Festival.
Though the featured composers aren't as famous as fellow San Diego musicians like Jason Mraz or Bing Crosby, the singers will share the history and connections of the pieces that are performed.
SACRA/PROFANA will perform on three different days, at three separate venues.
Details: 7 p.m. Friday at Maritime Museum of San Diego, 1492 N. Harbor Drive; 7 p.m. Saturday at ARTS Center, 200 E. 12th St., National City; 7 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way. $10 to $30; find details.
Filmatic Festival

The first of its kind in California, Filmatic invites visitors to experience the merging of traditional cinematic storytelling with the latest digital technologies and science.
The day begins with a welcome lecture by Larry Smarr, physicist and director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2).
It continues with various film stations throughout the venue, including "Solarium," a large-scale and immersive video installation of the sun using images captured by a NASA spacecraft. There's also a video project called "Stonemilker" that's a collaboration between Andrew Thomas Huang and Bjork.

Gregory Porter
Music
The San Diego Symphony's Jazz @ The Jacobs Series concludes with a concert by Gregory Porter.
The popular jazz singer is known for his rich voice and unassuming style. He got his start in music while attending SDSU on a football scholarship. A shoulder injury took him out of Aztecs football and into the musical theater department.
Now he's quite a superstar in the UK thanks to a sound that captures a 1960s-inspired soul.
In 2014, he won a Grammy for his jazz vocal album, "Liquid Spirit."
San Diego trumpet player Gilbert Castellanos will open the show with an all-star quartet, paying tribute to Jimmy Smith and masters of the Hammond B3 Organ.
