Scent And Sound Concert

Music

San Diego Art Institute presents Odophonics, an olfacto-sound performance by Brian Goeltzenleuchter and Sean Francis Conway featuring Art of Élan.

Think chamber music concert highlighted by scents of rose, jasmine, mint and cedar. Each chord is assigned a different smell.

It's based on 19th-century French perfumer Septimus Piesse's "odophone," a literal scale of smells corresponding to different pitches.

Using steam vapor and an industrial fan, Goeltzenleuchter introduces essences from Piesse's Odophone with an arrangement for chamber ensemble. The notes played by the musicians will correspond directly to the smells outlined in Piesse’s work.

Details: 4 p.m. Saturday. San Diego Art Institute, 1439 El Prado, Balboa Park. $5; (619) 236-0011 or find tickets.
