City Council Shakeup, SDSU West Success

Two incumbents on the San Diego City Council lost their re-election campaigns. Other results ensured Democrats on the council would hold a supermajority that could pose a new challenge to Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s agenda. Voters also decided to support the SDSU West plan for the stadium site in Mission Valley.

New Governor Elected, Gas Tax Survives

Democrat Gavin Newsom will succeed Jerry Brown as California governor after beating Republican candidate John Cox. Several ballot propositions were defeated, including efforts to repeal the 2017 gas tax increase and expand rent control authority to local governments.

Democrats Flip the 49th, Hunter Re-Elected Amid Scandal

A movement that started with weekly protests outside of Rep. Darrell Issa’s office resulted in the election of Mike Levin in the 49th congressional district. He is one of the dozens of new Democrats who will give their party the House majority next year. Republican congressman Duncan Hunter won re-election but will face a new threat to his career in a campaign spending trial set to begin in the coming weeks.
