It is the 29th annual event organized by the San Diego Association of Governments to promote commuting to work by bike.

"The more people we get out of cars onto bikes really reduces congestion and so it's a really important way to reducing air pollution," said Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, who also serves on SANDAG'S board. "Right now, San Diego has the sixth worst air pollution in the country so we need to do everything we can to make it easier for people not to get in their cars and enjoy walking, riding and biking."

SANDAG has set up more than 100 pit stops around San Diego County and one in Tijuana to offer riders T-shirts, drinks and snacks.

In 2013, SANDAG's board launched a plan to build a $200 million bike network in the region. Since then, about 10 miles of the plan's proposed 77 miles of bike lanes have been open to riders, according to a SANDAG spokesperson.

Bike to Work will take place rain or shine.

About 10,000 cyclists participated in the event last year.
