On what would have been Harvey Milk's 89th birthday, Midday Edition is airing a special episode from the KQED podcast, "Political Breakdown," looking back on the San Francisco Supervisor's life and legacy.

More than 40 years after Milk, the first openly gay elected public official in California, was killed in San Francisco, Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is one of the most talked-about candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for president.

The one-hour radio special, "Gay Candidates Then and Now, From Milk to Buttigieg," is co-hosted by Scott Shafer, senior editor for KQED's Politics and Government Desk, and correspondent Marisa Lagos.

In addition to analysis of the future of LGBT political candidates, the special features interviews with California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who was president of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors when Milk was assassinated in 1978, and an interview Buttigieg from February of this year.
