The book's release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the founding of Chicano Park in San Diego's Barrio Logan neighborhood.

As Chicano Park in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood marks its 50th anniversary this year, a new bilingual children’s book is recounting the park’s founding history — from the first takeover of the land in the 1970s to the creation of the park.

“The Spirit of Chicano Park,” traces the community’s struggle to build the park through the eyes of two young children who move into the neighborhood. Author Beatrice Zamora, a longtime community leader, says profits from the sale of the book will go to the Chicano Park Steering Committee and the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center.

Zamora and illustrator Maira Meza joined Midday Edition on Tuesday to discuss what today’s youth can learn from the park’s history and how the book can help parents teach their children about recent protests against racial injustice.

Residents of San Diego and Imperial County and Baja California are invited to nominate books online. Please submit nominations prior to March 15 for titles to be considered for the 2025 season. Share your favorite title or two today!
