The 1,000 Marines and Sailors from Camp Pendleton's 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment are the focus of a special series of reports airing on National Public Radio this week. The series tells the story of what the infantry battalion, nicknamed the "Dark Horse Battalion," endured during its seven-month deployment in Helmand Province, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. According to NPR, the Dark Horse suffered more casualties than any other Marine unit in the past decade.
