Media Identifies Soldier Accused of Afghan Civilian Massacre (VIDEO)

Several news outlets, including Fox News and NBC News, have identified the U.S. soldier accused of killed 16 Afghan civilians as Staff Sgt. Robert Bales.

Fox News reports three unnamed military sources confirmed Bales as the alleged shooter. Bales is now headed to the military's only maximum security prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Bales, 38, is originally from Ohio but has been stationed at Washington state's Joint Base Lewis-McChord for the entirety of his military career. Bales' attorney, John Henry Browne, told NBC News his client joined the military in response to 9/11:

Bales' wife, a Seattle-area executive, and two small children are now living on base at Joint-Base Lewis-McChord for their protection.

Military officials told Fox News Bales was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, of the 2nd Infantry Division. He has been deployed to Iraq three times, and Afghanistan once.
