Families throughout San Diego are saying "thanks" to the folks in our Armed Forces by inviting a pair of Marines to their home for Thanksgiving.

The Armed Services YMCA at Camp Pendleton has its own 'Adopt a Marine' program. Actually, it's "adopt two Marines," since the Marine students are required to travel in pairs because they've just graduated from boot camp and are new to the Corps.

ASYMCA Camp Pendleton teams up with the School of Infantry - West for this program:

School of Infantry Marine students are allowed approximately eight hours of liberty to enjoy the holiday, and unless the Marine's family is within a 90 mile radius of the School of Infantry, their training schedule does not allot enough travel time to be with family.

Because these Marine students aren't allowed to drive, the host family must arrange transportation for them - picking them up from base and bringing them home after the meal.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
