Search-and-rescue crews have recovered what they believe to be the wreckage of a U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jet in the Adriatic Sea, according to the Associated Press.

The pilot is still missing.

Maj. Erick Saks, chief of public affairs for the 31st Fighter Wing, told Stars and Stripes:

“We are still considering it a search-and-rescue operation. We are still hopeful.”

Aviano Air Base in Italy lost contact with the pilot on Monday. An Italian search team recovered debris on Tuesday believed to be from the missing F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The Air Force has not yet identified the missing pilot.
