Marines assigned to the Camp Pendleton-based 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit have found some interesting ways to spend their free time while deployed on the San Diego-based USS Rushmore.
Turns out, there's a lot to do on the Rushmore, which is currently deployed as part of the Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group - providing support for maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
According to the 15th MEU public affairs office, the Rushmore has a lot of what you'd find in a small town (or maybe a little bit more), like three gyms, a fully-stocked library, or the chance to take some college courses.
Activities planned to keep the Marines and Sailors entertained include “steel beach” barbeques on the flight deck, bingo and karaoke nights, and ice cream socials.
15th MEU field radio operator Cpl. Bernard Vu says he likes to spend his spare time in a musical way:
“I play the guitar and try to learn new songs during my free time. Playing guitar kills a lot of time and keeps me occupied during times of boredom. It’s important to find something fun to do because you will go crazy if you don’t. I’ve always wanted to learn to play and this deployment gave me the time to pursue that goal."
How does your Marine or Sailor spend his or her free time while deployed?
