The family of Camp Pendleton Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins has agreed to settle its federal lawsuit for $4.4 million.
The case stems from the February 7, 2012 shooting death of the 31-year-old Loggins at San Clemente High School. Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Sandberg shot Loggins to death in front of his two young daughters when Loggins allegedly failed to comply with Sandberg's commands.
The Orange County District Attorney investigated the shooting and cleared Sandberg of any wrongdoing in September 2012 - claiming Sandberg was justified for shooting the unarmed Loggins because he was protecting Loggins' daughters from their father's "irrational" behavior.
In May 2012, the Loggins family filed a federal lawsuit against Orange County, the Orange County Sheriff's Department, and Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Sandberg.
As Home Post previously reported, the Orange County Board of Supervisors voted in April to settle the lawsuit.
