The Department of Defense has identified Army Maj. Michael J. Donahue, 41, as one of two Americans killed Tuesday when their convoy was attacked by a suicide car bomber near Kabul, Afghanistan.

As Home Post reported Wednesday, the other American killed was Navy Reservist Stephen Byus, 39, of Columbus, Ohio.

Donahue was assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg. Lt. Col. Gabriel Barton, Donahue's battalion commander, said of Donahue:

"The Dragon Family has suffered a great loss today, and we would like to express our deepest condolences to the Donahue Family. Maj. Michael Donahue was an exceptional officer and a huge part of our team and our family."

The Army Times reports Donahue leaves behind his wife, Sherri, and their children Victoria, Seamus, and Bailey.

In 2011, when Donahue was stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia, he ran 50 miles within a 24-hour period to raise money for Wounded Warriors. Local television station WJBF-TV ran this story on Donahue's good deed:
