Deadly Wildfire Spreads Near Palm Springs, Calif.

More than a 1,000 firefighters are battling a wind-blown wildfire in the rugged hills east of Los Angeles.

The blaze has charred nearly 24,000 acres, or almost 38 square miles, and was only 5 percent contained early Friday.

The fire killed four U.S. Forest Service firefighters early Thursday, while a fifth firefighter remains critically injured. They were engulfed by a swiftly moving wall of flame while attempting to protect a home near Cabazon, Calif.

Emergency officials say the fire was started by an arsonist. A $100,000 reward has been posted for information the results in the conviction of the arsonist.
