Baja California's Governor has asked people to stay home. He's also closed all non essential government offices closed in the Mexican state for five days. This despite the fact that no cases of swine flu have been confirmed in Baja. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
Baja California Governor Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan says only essential government workers in Baja, like doctors, police, garbage collectors and the army will continue to work.
He says only essential businesses like supermarkets, pharmacies and media outlets should stay open.
Schools throughout Mexico closed last week as a precautionary measure.
Osuna Millan is urging everyone in Baja to stay home through May fifth, "Less moving around helps reduce the risks. There's no place better to avoid catching swine flu than at home." (translated from Spanish)
The Governor also asks the state's maquiladora industry to cut production to the bare minimum.
Baja's Secretary of Health says doctor visits in the state have increased 30-percent during the last few days because people are being extra cautious.
