The City of San Diego doesn’t have to worry about IOUs. But Mayor Jerry Sanders says the state’s budget mess threatens to undo a lot of the financial improvements San Diego has made.
Sanders says many of the programs that could be getting IOUs from the state are run by the county. But he says all of the tax revenue San Diego receives goes through the state first and he doesn’t know how quickly California will pass it along. He says the situation in Sacramento is especially frustrating because San Diego has spent the past three years working hard to fix its financial problems.
“All that good work, getting all of our audits in, getting back into the bond market, getting a new pension system in place, getting all these things done, all that work’s being jeopardized by a state that literally can’t even figure out how to meet and talk with each other,” he says.
Sanders says San Diego is still prepared to take part in a lawsuit against the state if the legislature tries to take the city’s share of the gas tax to close California’s budget gap.
