The public got its first look Wednesday at modified plans for San Diego’s downtown waterfront. The Port of San Diego is hoping to craft a plan that satisfies critics and the Coastal Commission.
A large crowd gathered to see the plans which offer varying combinations of trees and lawn space along the Embarcadero between the B Street and Navy piers.
The Port had to modify its proposal for the first phase of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan after the plan was rejected by the Coastal Commission. The Port was told to make up for a 2.5 acre park it eliminated at the foot of Broadway. Port spokesman Ron Powell said some of the open space will be fit into phase one. But he says the rest may have to wait until phase two.
“We can only make so many changes. We can’t totally re-do it. If we do, we’d have to go back to square one and bring a new plan forward. That might take two years,” he said.
Powell said it’s important to act now while the money for phase one is available.
Port staff hopes to bring the final phase one plan to the Port Commission in November.
