The city of Chula Vista will begin a reduced schedule of operating hours at civic facilities Friday, part of on-going budget cuts that saw the loss of 101 full-time jobs.
The Clerk's Office will be open during regular working hours Monday through Wednesday, but will shut down at noon on Thursdays and remain closed on Fridays. The office will no longer provide passport services.
The Finance and Human Resources offices will be open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and be closed Fridays.
The Friday closures will extend to all City Hall offices.
The Civic Center and South libraries will be closed two days per week, and the Eastlake branch will be open only Monday and Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Recreation centers will be open only two days per week, with varied schedules depending on the location. Free and drop-in activities have been eliminated.
The Norman Park Senior Center will be open on weekdays until noon this month, but in February it will close on Fridays.
Public works employees will no longer remove graffiti on private property, take picnic shelter reservations only on the city's Web site, trim trees only on an emergency basis, and eliminate many custodial services.
"Since 2007, we have eliminated 259 permanent positions," City Manager Jim Sandoval said. "With the loss of another 101 full-time positions in January, we simply cannot provide the same level of programming and services we once did."
The city has reached agreements with all public employee groups except police officers in order to reduce expenses, mainly by making changes in pension programs.
