Brown Says He'll Veto Lots of Bills
California Governor Jerry Brown is sending a stern warning to state lawmakers: Get ready for lots of vetoes in the next few weeks.

California Governor Jerry Brown is sending a stern warning to state lawmakers.

“I’m going to veto a lot of bills over the next 30 days,” said Brown. “So I have to say to some, fasten your seat belt – this is going to be a rough ride. They’ve given me 600 bills, and there’s not 600 problems that we need those solutions for.”

If Brown does veto lots of bills, he’ll be taking a different approach from his first stint as governor in the 1970’s and 80’s. During those eight years, he vetoed less than five percent of the more than 11,000 regular session bills that reached his desk.

Brown also said he writes many of his own veto messages – especially ones that he said have “some flair to them.” Wednesday, he repeated a line in one recent veto message: “Not every human problem needs a law.”

The governor has until October 9th to act on the flurry of measures lawmakers passed last week just before leaving town.
