Before interim San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria addresses San Diego with his State of the City, the two city councilmen hoping to replace him will face off in the first of six mayoral debates Wednesday afternoon.
Councilmen David Alvarez and Kevin Faulconer take the stage in the KPBS/10News-hosted debate beginning at 1 p.m. Viewers can watch live online or on KPBS TV at 5 and 6:30 p.m. It will also be replayed on Thursday's KPBS Midday Edition.
The debate will focus on open government and transparency.
The candidates will also be answering user-submitted questions. Their responses will be posted on KPBS.org.
Coming in to the debate, the latest poll by 10News/U-T San Diego shows Faulconer ahead of Alvarez.
The two men were the top vote-getters in the Nov. 19 primary election, after Alvarez pushed past ex-Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher in a surprise late-campaign sprint.
Alvarez and Faulconer are competing to fill the remaining term of former mayor Bob Filner, who resigned last summer amid multiple allegations of unwanted sexual advances.
