As the political race for the County Board of Supervisors District 3 seat comes to a climax, local Democrats say a Republican group is spreading misinformation to Democrats via text.

The texts sent out Tuesday morning to Democratic voters claim Republican Supervisor Kristin Gaspar “is the CHOICE for San Diego Democrats. We need Gaspar back on the Board of Supervisors to work with Nathan Fletcher for equality and justice for all.”

The text also says it was paid for by the Community Leadership Coalition, a political action committee funded by the conservative Lincoln Club of San Diego County.

The San Diego Democratic Party has endorsed Gaspar’s opponent, Terra Lawson-Remer, for the non-partisan District 3 seat.

Fletcher and other members of the Democratic party in San Diego were quick to respond, including Will Rodriguez-Kennedy, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party.

“The statements by the Lincoln Club are bold faced lies,” Rodriguez-Kennedy said in a news release. “Democrats in District 3 should cast their vote for Terra Lawson-Remer. Do not let yourselves be tricked by Republican lies.”

Brian Pepin, President of the Lincoln Club of San Diego County said, "The wording talks about her being the choice of Democrats in that district. And there's nothing deceitful about that at all. Supervisor Gaspar is the choice of Democratic voters in supervisor District 3, and she was again four years ago."

KPBS also reached out to Kristin Gaspar’s team for comment on the issue, but did not receive a response.

The race between the incumbent Gaspar and political newcomer Lawson-Remer may change the political landscape on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors as it will determine whether Democrats reach a board majority.
