Free bus rides and police checkpoints will be part of the effort to insure San Diegans don't drink and drive this New Year's Eve.
Tonight, after 9 p.m., riding the bus and the trolley will be free. Free transit rides on New Year's Eve have been offered for many years in San Diego. Last year, the Sycuan Band of Indians stepped in to pick up the cost when budget cuts threatened to end the service.
Ross Burns is the executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in San Diego. He said police will also be stopping drivers at checkpoints tonight to make sure they aren't driving drunk.
"They're going to saturate the whole entire central city, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach, they're going to be out in full force in downtown," Burns said.
All San Diego trolley lines will provide free service all night. All night-service will also take place on the 7, 11 and 901 bus lines.
