Spring Valley Brush Fire Spurs Evacuations

People in the Lamplighter Village neighborhood of Spring Valley were evacuated today to avoid threatening flames from a 50-acre brush fire, authorities said.

The blaze damaged one home after it broke out just before 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Jamacha at Sweetwater roads, according to Roxanne Provaznik, spokeswoman for Cal Fire.

By 2:45 p.m., fire crews stopped the fire's spread, but they continued to battle active burning spots, Provaznik said.

Ten engines, four fire crews, one bulldozer, four water tenders, two helicopters and two airtankers responded to fight the fire, she said.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
