Teen Driver Arrested In Fatal Racing Crash

A 16-year old boy who allegedly was racing another driver when he got into a crash that killed two teenagers on State Route 52 in Kearny Mesa last week has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter and two counts of participating in a speed contest resulting in injury.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, went to the CHP's station on Pacific Highway along with his father about 10 a.m. to turn himself in after being notified that he was the subject of an arrest warrant.

The other driver involved in the April 4 fatal accident, 18-year-old Michael S. Johnson of Lakeside, is scheduled to be arraigned in the case this afternoon.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
