A man was detained for questioning this afternoon after driving up to an entrance gate at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and making what were perceived to be threatening statements to military guards.
The motorist arrived at the base's North Gate in a dark-colored sedan about 1 p.m., according to a statement from the base.
The suspect, whose identity was not released, was taken into custody, and Marine Corps officials closed down the entryway while military and San Diego police interrogated him.
Several residences and commercial buildings in the immediate area were evacuated as a bomb squad searched the suspect's vehicle with a remote-controlled robotic device. A stretch of Miramar Road also was blocked off as a precaution, military officials said.
The emergency measures were rescinded about 4:30 p.m., and police released the suspect after determining that there was no substance to the seemingly threatening comments he had made, according to USMC officials.
Authorities declined to disclose the nature of the alleged threats.
