  • From June 12-18, 2023 DISCO RIOT will present San Diego’s only queer-focused movement-arts festival, Queer Mvmnt Fest. Under the direction of local queer dance artists, Desiree Cuizon and Trystan Merrick, the festival features artists who identify as part of the queer, trans and gender-nonconforming dance community in San Diego and beyond. This festival empowers and showcases LGBTQIA+ artists from all backgrounds through performance, workshops, discussions, and classes. The wide variety of FREE programming offers opportunities in queer focused spaces as well as sharing with the general public. Queer Mvmnt Fest highlights the work of BIPOC artists within the LGBTQIA+ community, examining and centering the need for addressing inequity through an intersectional lens.   • Cory "CPez" Pesaturo is revolutionizing the accordion. He began playing at age nine, and became the youngest person to win the National Accordion Championships. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and studied Contemporary Improvisation and a variety of music styles, including Italian and French folk music, Bulgarian and Jewish music, Classical music and Jazz. He became the second person to major in and graduate as an accordionist there. Cory is one of only four accordionists in history to win a World Championship on both acoustic and electronic accordion, and is the only person to also win a world championship in jazz. In 2017, he broke the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous playing of the accordion and has given TED Talks, Google Talks, an EG Talk, and spoken at various other conferences on the accordion. His past performances included filling in the accordionist on The Lawrence Welk Show at the age of 12, performing on four occasions at the White House, and playing at six other events and private functions for President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. He has also appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and on nationally televised programs in New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Tunisia, France, and Finland. Follow Cory Pesaturo on Facebook

  • Skate Rising is hosting free learn-to-skate lessons on Saturday May 13 from 9-11 a.m. at Encinitas Community Park. Founded in 2016, the program offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for girls ages 4-18 every second Saturday of the month. The youth program invites participants to bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste or other personal care products to donate to the Community Resource Center’s domestic violence services. Professional instruction will be offered by local pro and Olympic skaters and free rental gear will be available for all. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes from Arbor Skateboards, Hydro Flask and Etnies. Those who are interested can register for free here.

  • Join San Diego Botanic Garden for a unique opportunity to learn about two countries often covered in the news, but not always well understood. Ukraine and Armenia are known not only for their fascinating histories and complex present-day realities, but also for their spectacular landscapes and exotic flora. This event welcomes an impressive roster of presenters from both regions, including the directors from Lviv Botanical Garden in Ukraine and Yerevan Botanical Garden in Armenia. Each will introduce their country’s unique profile, and showcase photos and descriptions of the native flora and related environmental challenges they are faced with. They will also discuss the key roles of their gardens in preserving biodiversity and delivering public education programs, and will highlight an exciting collaboration with U.S. colleagues currently underway. Andriy Prokopiv of Lviv Botanical Garden will also discuss current wartime conditions in Ukraine, and how botanical gardens there are striving to provide services to millions of internal refugees and traumatized veterans.
