The second event in the series Music on the Move features a presentation by the project Drummers Without Borders and Francisco Morales, sound artist and curator of the Front Gallery. Showcasing artists whose work and practice are informed by border dynamics, we present important perspectives on how music and performance play a role in reshaping the border narrative. Drummers Without Borders (DWB) was formed in San Diego, CA, in 2004 by Felix Diaz, Silvio Diaz, and Abril Diaz, a family of musicians, educators, and artists. It began as a program introducing music to students with special needs in one underserved elementary school. Felix, Silvio, and Abril taught the students how to drum to help establish feelings of accomplishment. Through the years, DWB gained experience, evolved, and grew to incorporate students and the public of all ages in the therapeutic practice of drumming. Drummers Without Borders’ mission is to develop music projects to address gaps in education, community building, health, and the environment stretching beyond San Diego. DWB’s welcomes collaboration with individuals and organizations of similar interests. They hope their expertise can create a better world for future generations. About Francisco Morales Eme Francisco Eme, originally from Mexico City, now lives and works in San Diego, CA. Francisco is a composer, producer, and multimedia artist. He mainly works with sound but integrates various disciplines into his practice. He has released solo albums, collaborations, and musical projects in electroacoustic, experimental, and electronic pop music, and other genres. His work has been featured in museums, galleries, and concert halls in Mexico, the United States, Europe, and South America. Francisco is the current Gallery Director at The FRONT Arte & Cultura, a bi-national art gallery in the San Diego-Tijuana border region, where he curates art exhibitions, workshops, concerts, and performances focused on the transnational artistic life of the area, but also attentive to the international art scene. There are growing concerns about the risk of conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan. This presentation explores the rising tensions by analyzing three different abstract terms: the pursuit by Beijing of "peaceful" unification with Taiwan; the U.S. commitment to "unofficial" relations with Taiwan; and U.S. opposition to unilateral changes to the "status quo" in the Taiwan Strait. For decades, these terms served as a bargain for maintaining peace and stability, but the agreement was only theoretical, because the United States and China never reached a joint understanding of what these terms mean in practice. Against the backdrop of great power competition, the discrepancies in the U.S. approach has been laid bare, raising the risk that the bargain could unravel entirely and lead to war between the United States and China. Join the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) and 21st Century China Center for a talk with Dr. James Lee, assistant research fellow at the Institute of European and American Studies at Academia Sinica in Taiwan and an affiliated researcher at IGCC. His research has been published in International Studies Quarterly, Business and Politics, the Journal of Strategic Studies, the Journal of East Asian Studies, and the Journal of Chinese Political Science. His policy writing has been published in Global Asia, the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, East Asia Forum, Political Violence at a Glance, and The Diplomat. He received his Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University in 2018 and subsequently held research positions at the European University Institute in Florence and the University of California, San Diego. Second Chance Beer Company, the award-winning “Seize a Pint, Save a Pup” brewery in Carmel Mountain, is hosting its 3rd-Annual Pupapalooza Dog Festival on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Pupapalooza will have more than 20 locally-owned dog-themed vendors on hand, adoptable pups from The Animal Pad dog rescue organization, food trucks, and live music. The event is free to attend, though there is a Gold VIP option for $150 and a Silver VIP option for $125. The packages include a 10-minute professional photo session for pets in a Puppy Picnic Co. set-up, along with gift bags and other items. For the first time in the event’s history, Second Chance will be releasing a special beer specifically for the festivities: Guava Wheat Ale (4.5% ABV) that will be available on draft and in 16-oz cans. Regarded as one of the most dog-friendly establishments in all of San Diego, Second Chance will donate proceeds from the event to The Animal Pad. As always, 1% of sales of Second Chance’s core beers Buddy Lager and New Day West Coast IPA that day will be donated to dog rescue organizations as well. San Diego’s only beachfront amusement and entertainment center, will host its second annual park-wide hiring festival, Jobapalooza. The largest hiring fair in Mission Beach, this event will connect job seekers with local employers from a variety of industries, including hospitality, service, ride operators and more. Belmont Park tenants will have tables/booths setup along the Adrenaline Alley/Food Court area and interviews will be conducted at Coaster Terrace. Job seekers will have the opportunity to meet with employers, learn about available positions, and submit resumes and applications on-site!
