The Vietnamese American Youth Alliance will welcome the Year of Cat with the 18th annual San Diego Tết Festival in Mira Mesa, a three-day event featuring lion dances, a Cultural Village, the Miss Vietnam Pageant, and Vietnamese food, music and vendors. New to this year’s Tết Festival, which takes place from Jan. 27-29 at Mira Mesa Community Park, is an eSports competition, which has become increasingly popular among Asian youths. The festival is the largest Lunar New Year festival in San Diego County, with more than 30,000 attendees each year. Festival hours are 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday at Mira Mesa Community Park. Admission is free. This year is unique as the Vietnamese population celebrates the Year of the Cat, while Chinese and other Asian countries celebrate the Year of the Rabbit.

Skate Rising, a program that offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for children, is hosting a holiday jacket drive and learn-to-skate clinic 9-11 a.m. on Dec. 10 at the Encinitas Community Park. The six-year-old program is inviting girls ages 4-18 to bring new or lightly worn outerwear to donate to the Community Resource Center. You saw William Mulholland in the movie Chinatown, but that highly fictionalized film only scratched the surface of this controversial figure. In one of the greatest civil engineering feats in American history, William Mulholland designed and built the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which transported water 233 miles from the picturesque Owens Valley south to Los Angeles. Completed in 1913, the aqueduct made him a hero to Angelenos, but fifteen years later, the St. Francis Dam above Los Angeles burst, killing over 400 people and effectively ending his career. This event is free and open to the public, and there is no need to pre-register.  Recommended for adults.

Culinary Historians of San Diego will present “1001 ‘Fritters’: Food in the Arabian Nights,” featuring Charles Perry, at Saturday, January 21, in the Neil Morgan Auditorium of the San Diego Central Library. As a collection of wonder tales being recited to hungry audiences in Middle Eastern bazaars, the Arabian Nights naturally included a number of references to foods. Translators have generally fudged their identity with guesswork — even though a number of medieval Arab cookbooks have been translated by now, several by Charles Perry. For instance, three totally unrelated sweets are usually translated as ‘fritters.’ Charles will lift the curtain on these mysterious treats. Charles Perry, grandson of a silent film screenwriter and great-grandson of Gold Rush pioneers, is an internationally known food writer. He is the president of Culinary Historians of Southern California, was a major contributor to The Oxford Companion to Food and served two terms as a trustee of the annual Oxford Symposium on Food and Cookery. Perry is the author of numerous publications in the fields of food and the Sixties. The event is free and open to the public.
