While Happy Hour may sound like an inherently adult concept, One Paseo is offering children the chance to discover the joy of happy hour with their Kids Happy Hour series. Join One Paseo every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the summer, beginning on June 2 and ending on August 25, for kid-friendly entertainment and snacks from One Paseo’s eateries to create a festive event for the whole family. Entertainment options include magic shows, storytime, a ventriloquist, puppet shows, and more. Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is planning a Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration like no other in San Diego – a free, family-friendly immersive experience designed to bring the spirit of this traditional annual Mexican and South American celebration to life for San Diegans of all ages. The experience is slated to run from October 15 through November 2. Día de Muertos is traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 each year. Día de Muertos is a community-wide celebration of the history, Hispanic culture and rich heritage of the region. It is at this time of year that the spirits of loved ones who have died are thought to return to Earth to celebrate with friends and family. It is traditionally a time to gather and celebrate and remember the lives of those who are no longer with us. The Fiesta de Reyes courtyard at the north end of the state park will be full of fanciful, humorous, and visually stimulating décor, offered as tributes to many of San Diego’s early citizens. Many life-sized Catrina skeleton dolls in fancy dress, and many larger-than-life size, hold court at Fiesta de Reyes throughout the event. New displays are being added this year with many being at child height and partially hidden, waiting to be discovered. This year, there will be more than 50 unique Día de Muertos displays in Fiesta de Reyes, thousands of marigolds – a traditional flower associated with Día de Muertos – will garner the courtyard, and live entertainment on the Fiesta de Reyes stage. Staff will dress in festive attire associated with Day of the Dead and merchants will host both traditional and more contemporary Día de Muertos altars throughout the plaza. Fiesta de Reyes is open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Free parking is available throughout Old Town with extra parking available across Taylor Street in the CalTrans parking lot all day on weekend days and after 5 p.m. on weekdays.

On Friday, October 14, The Elizabeth Hospice will host MOTOWN DOWNTOWN, a special event benefiting the Children’s Bereavement Program from The Elizabeth Hospice. The evening will include a gourmet dinner, wine and a live musical performance by Remembrance 5, a Temptations Tribute group. Motown Downtown will be held at Escondido City Hall, 201 N. Broadway, Escondido, at the fountain, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. There will be a silent and live auction. Everyone in the community (21 years or older) is invited to attend. The cost per person is $175. Caring for our community’s children is key to The Elizabeth Hospice’s mission. One in five children will experience the death of someone significant in their life before they reach the age of 18. Without grief support, children are at higher-than-average risk for problems in school, substance abuse, depression and anxiety. The Elizabeth Hospice’s Children’s Bereavement Program is the only one of its kind in San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County. The program includes school-based grief support groups in 20 school districts, peer-based grief support groups held throughout the school year in Children’s Bereavement Centers in Escondido and Mission Valley, summer grief camp, and community grief education and support. The award winning Rob Thorsen Quartet will perform a variety of music which includes jazz, latin music, original compositions and more. The band includes bassist Rob Thorsen, pianist Alexander Anderson, vibraphonist Matt DiBiase and drummer Richard Sellers. Together they integrate many different music styles that contribute to their modern jazz sound. From Duke Ellington to Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis, the trio weaves together a unique sound that honors the jazz masters while inspiring a fresh approach to this great American art form. Bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer, educator, clinician and composer. After playing classical guitar, flute, saxophones, tuba and electric bass as a youth, he found his true voice in the upright bass. “When I began playing upright bass, the fact that I felt the sound as much as heard it had a profound effect on me. I was hooked for life.” A San Diego based musician, vibraphonist Matt DiBiase has performed his original music on multiple tours in the U.S. as well as internationally in Europe and the Middle East. California native Alexander Anderson is a forward-thinking pianist, keyboardist, composer, and arranger with a bent toward mixing 70s-influenced jazz and fusion with hip-hop and R&B. Alexander has multiple record releases to his credit and is also a prolific composer and arranger. Richard Sellers has been playing drums with countless groups and ensembles in a variety of styles, including straight-ahead jazz, avant-garde jazz, Brazilian, Latin, funk and hip-hop. Richard recorded with the Internationally acclaimed Mike Wofford/ Holly Hofmann quintet for their 2014 release “Turn Signal”

Ancient relics are the remains of great saints, realized beings, masters - from all religions. They are a manifestation of these beings' qualities, such as compassion, lovingkindness. The relics were left behind to inspire people. Lama Lhanang, leader of Jigme Lingpa Center, will be displaying 21+ relics that he has been gifted over the years. They include remains of Shakyamuni Buddha and many realized beings that succeeded him. You can see an incredible short video of that relic here.
