  • After years of community planning, organizing, fundraising and build-out, Suncoast Market Co-op will celebrate the grand opening of its full-service, community-owned grocery store with a Grand Opening Celebration and Ribbon Cutting! Created by and for South County residents, Suncoast Market Co-op is a community-owned grocery store. They are opening with a “hybrid” store model, intentionally combining natural, organic, local, and specialty foods with mainstream, value-priced staples and culturally specific products from many traditions. SunCoast will also offer great fresh produce, bulk, bakery, deli grab and go items, a hot food bar and salad bar. The festivities will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; speakers and ribbon cutting are scheduled for 9-9:30 a.m. Grand Opening Celebration highlights include: - Guest speakers, including County of San Diego Supervisor Paloma Aguirre and City of Imperial Beach Mayor Pro Tem, Jack Fisher - Giveaways - Delicious food samples - Music by radio personality and DJ Xavier “The X-Man®” Unlike conventional grocery stores, co-ops are owned by the community they serve. Members have a voice in how the store operates, profits are reinvested locally, and decisions are guided by shared values rather than distant shareholders. Food co-ops often prioritize local farmers and producers, fair wages and ethical sourcing, environmental responsibility, inclusive access to healthy food, democratic ownership, and transparency. Suncoast Market Co-op is open to everyone to shop, and community members may choose to become member-owners to help shape the co-op’s future. SunCoast Market on Instagram
  • Leucadia resident, Steve White, was a beloved singer, songwriter, and blues guitarist who passed away in April 2011 at age 61. Steve developed his own style as a one-man band, playing baritone guitar in non-standard tuning with a percussive hand technique and pinky slide, along with an amplified footboard and killer blues harp. Steve played across the United States and toured Europe twice a year, performing for thousands of people who knew and loved his music. He played many times for San Diego Folk Heritage and was always generous with his time, helping to set up and tear down for many SDFH concerts, when he didn’t have a gig of his own. SDFH is dedicating March 15, 2026 (the day after his birthday) to remembering Steve. From 4 to 6 p.m., his friends and fellow performers Joe Rathburn, David Beldock, Shawn Rolhf and Steve Denyes, Luisa Corredor and Ignacio Arango, and Larry and Jo Ann Sinclair will be singing some of Steve’s songs and some of their original songs about Steve. Afterwards, Alda Lael, Steve’s life partner, will be hosting a reception with vegetarian food, followed by a showing of Clint Burkett and Tom Zizzi’s documentary film about "Steve, Painting the World with Music." Please join us in remembering a man who left us way too soon. Visit: sdfolkheritage.org/events/steve-white-memorial-concert-and-documentary-screening/
