  • Join the City of Carlsbad for a sustainable holidays-themed fixit clinic and repair event at Cole Library on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Repair: Keep items out of the landfill and get help fixing small household appliances, electronics, bikes, clothing and more. Reuse: Ditch the paper and wrap your holiday gifts using recycled fabrics. Repurpose: Find new life for felt fabrics by crafting your own holiday star decorations. Recycle: Bring in used household batteries and holiday light strands for recycling. This event will also feature two screenings of the documentary “Abundance: The Farmlink Story” at 10:30 a.m. and noon, with a Q&A session with the director at 11:30 a.m. The short film highlights a group of college students who set out to reduce food waste and help people experiencing food insecurity.
  • The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Destination Healthy Skin RV is back for its sixth year, and will be in Encinitas, CA on Thursday, July 6th. The Foundation’s 38-foot RV, customized with two private exam rooms, will travel around the country from May to September. Inside the RV, local dermatologists provide free full-body skin cancer screenings, which are first come, first served from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Participants will also receive educational materials and sun protection samples. Dr. Melanie Palm, San Diego-based board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, has donated her time and services to the Foundation and will conduct the screenings. Volunteer physicians are all practicing, local dermatologists. They are available for onsite interviews, where they can discuss the Destination Healthy Skin program, skin cancer prevention and early detection. For more infromation visit: skincancer.org
