  • Helena Westra Cooler Room Artist in Residence July 3 to Aug. 26, 2023 About Helena's Residency at Art Produce: My project will be research and experimentation based. I am excited to deepen my understanding of native clays and pit firing ceramics to explore the idea of the controlled burn and the processes of letting go and self-reclamation. I plan to sculpt symbolic forms with clay that resonate with my experience. In doing so, I hope to grow my creative intuition as an artist and individual.   • If you have a little one (ages 5+) who loves to draw and loves hedgehogs (and who doesn’t?), check out our “Mommy and Me and Hedgehog Makes 3” activity on Saturday, June 17 at 10 A.M. We’ll begin by introducing you to one of our hedgehogs. While you’re enjoying some great “meet and greet” time, one of our keeper / educators will tell you everything you want to know about these amazing little animals. After that, one of the professional artists from ArtSmarts will help you create your very own portrait of this guy. We’ll provide all the guidance and supplies, so you can focus on your masterpiece.   • Join us for a morning of macrame and make a pillow! Macrame projects are perfect for home decor, as they’re durable, versatile, and lend that boho chic look to any space. And, this macrame pillow project is perfect for the upcoming warm months of spring and summer relaxation, wherever you’re hanging out. In this workshop, students will macrame their own pillow covers for a supplied white 12×20 pillow insert. *Note: the white pillow insert will show through the macrame pattern, so if students would like to have a different color, it is recommended they bring a pillowcase or cover to cover the pillow. Pillowcases are not included. The instructor recommends this pillow cover. Students, please choose from the following macrame cord color options for your project: White, Black, Blue, Brown, Green.   • Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. All materials included. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! In this workshop you’ll learn: • How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; • How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) • How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; • How to Weave; • How to Remove your Woven; • And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile. OPTION: Students will weave on my Ashford looms in-class. The instructor will have a variety of Ashford looms (Sample It and Knitters Looms) present for purchase in class.   • The 16th year of this combined Arts/Taste annual event will start at the Taste ticket will call, information booth located in front of Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd. Pick up a free event map to artist studios and exhibitions in businesses and restaurants along and around Park Blvd. Join the community in celebrating the culinary flavors and local libations that make UH so unique. Taste tickets are $30 in advance or $35 event day. Included with your ticket is a free chance on a big assortment of prizes held at 3:30 pm at Diversionary Theatre. The Taste of UH hours are Noon - 3 p.m. UH Arts Open is a self-guided, free tour of artists’ studios. Open Studios is a chance to experience first-hand how, where, and why art is created and provides a glimpse into the life of the working artist. The UH Arts Open hours are 11-4 p.m. with free shuttle service for both events.
  • Come celebrate and honor the life of Coach Herb Meyer with Carol Meyer (spouse) Joe and David (sons) Meyer as they prepare to say goodbye. There are two events open to the public. Funeral mass at the Mission in Oceanside at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 19 and a Celebration of Life on May 20 at 4 p.m. His wife Carol wants everyone two know that both events are open to everyone (public). Legendary High School Coaches Ed Burke and John Carroll are the keynote speakers for the Celebration of Life event at El Camino HS on May 20 at 3 - 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers , the family requests donating to the Herb Meyer Scholarship Memorial Fund. The fund will provide yearly scholarships to Oceanside Student Athletes. It has been filed as a 501c and as the family waits for it to be established, they have setup a gofundme page. The family asks if you can mention the Celebration of Life event for May 20 at Herb Meyer Stadium and the Memorial Scholarship Fund.
