  • Meet Vivi Anderson, a member of the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League, North Coastal Art Gallery. Vivi will share her passions, inspirations and world of talents from a book author to her art. It is always interesting to know what makes these artist tic and what keeps their clocks running. Vivi has been an artist for most of her life and loves to put beauty on canvas, with vibrant colors, to inspire everyone that sees her work. The ocean has been one of her most inspiring subjects to paint, as well as colorful flowers in open fields and neighborhood gardens. Having studied under various art instructors has helped her to develop her very own style to create a variety of artwork. Many of her paintings come from local beaches as well as the rugged coast of the Carmel area, including the Asilomar Coast. She studied for four years under Ron DiCianni, a very well-known artist. She learned to paint portraits under Ron because his philosophy is that “If you can paint faces, you can paint anything.” She enjoys painting people’s pets which gives her a freedom to enjoy a variety of subjects on which to apply her artwork.

  • In one of those wonderful coincidences of history, lumière, the French word for “light,” was also the last name of brothers Auguste and Louis, whose brilliant invention, the cinematograph, helped to inaugurate the most beloved art form of the last 130 years. Institute Lumière director Thierry Frémaux uses Lumière, Le Cinéma! to guide the viewer through over a hundred shorts—some famous, some forgotten, some never before seen—directed by Lumière and company. In the process, Frémaux illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for quotidian and exotic microdocumentaries as well as the first ever fictional motion pictures. The result is not only a glorious re(telling) of the genesis of cinema but a profound meditation on the beautiful world captured—and the mysterious world imagined—by the Lumières. • "The Dykes and Their Friends Between Revolutions" is Lambda Archives of San Diego's adaptation of the 1977 book title "The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions" by Larry Mitchell. Mitchell's visionary work imagined queer liberation through allegorical storytelling, offering a radical vision of community, resistance, and survival during a time of intense political struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. By centering "Dykes" in the series title, we honor the specific histories, activism, and cultural contributions of lesbian and queer women in our region—communities whose stories have often been marginalized even within LGBTQ+ historical narratives. Like Mitchell's original work, our series explores the spaces "between revolutions"—those crucial moments of organizing, community-building, and resilience that sustain movements for justice across generations. This event series includes an exhibit featuring original archival material from our collection that showcases the history of LGBTQ+ lesbian organizing, arts, advocacy, and political struggles in the San Diego-Tijuana region.
