  • Learn to make your own Wooden Pen! Sunday, June 8, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. In this beginner 3-hour woodworking workshop, students will learn basic woodturning techniques, including tool and lathe safety, tool sharpening, how to set up and use a pen mandrel, sizing wood blanks and drilling of the wood blanks for brass tubes to be inserted. Woodturning techniques with woodturning gouges will be covered and the use of a finish will be applied to the finished product. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older.   • Learn Basketry Basics! Saturday, May 3, 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. In this basket weaving workshop, students will learn to weave a traditional round basket while customizing it your way with different color, weave, and rim options. Weaving techniques taught in this class include: twining, over-under interrupted, 3-Rod wale, braided rim, or lashed on rim. The size of each finished basket will be approximately 8 inches at the base and 5 inches high. Students: Please bring sturdy scissors & an old towel if you can! No experience necessary.   • In collaboration with So Say We All, the Hausmann Quartet presents "Seven Last Words," a performance of Joseph Haydn’s epic masterpiece alongside spoken word presentations of original works by the authors themselves. The texts will be inspired by the same scripture upon which Haydn based each of the movements of his monumental work, The Seven Last Words of Christ. Originally commissioned for a Good Friday service in 1783, it was adapted for string quartet by the composer and has since become a treasured Easter-time tradition around the world.   • Learn to needle felt! Saturday, May 3, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Learn to create simple sea pebbles from humble wool! Using wool, you will learn and practice needle felting techniques, feeling the cloud of fibers taking body and turning into a beautiful object. Each student will make an assortment of sea pebbles, in different tones, shapes and sizes. They make a lovely decoration, lucky stones, or tokens of friendship! In this class you will learn about wool, how to use different size needles, and felting safety (guards will be supplied for use), as we embark in the meditative process of felting, rounding edges, smoothing angles, and adding delicate veins to make your own personal trompe-l’oeil stones. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome.   • Master the Art of Sourdough! Saturday, April 26, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. This 2-hour class introduces intermediate level topics in sourdough baking, such as heirloom wheat varieties, inclusions, discard recipes, a new less time-intensive bread recipe, and bulk baking. This workshop includes your own take-home loaf of sourdough bread (to bake the next morning). Prerequisite: It is helpful if you have already taken Hands-On Sourdough Bread Workshop &/or already know how to maintain a starter and bake a loaf of sourdough bread before taking this class. We won’t be covering the basic bread recipe or basic starter maintenance. This workshop is for ages 16+years. In this workshop, students will learn basic knots and techniques to create a hexagon hanger wall hanging, perfect for any decor, whether you’re going for a boho chic look or simply just want to add some texture to your walls. Each student will leave with a finished wall hanging and ideas for their next macramé project! Materials provided.   • The VAPA Foundation, dedicated to enhancing access to arts education for San Diego students in grades K through 12, is thrilled to announce its annual Beyond Brilliance Gala, an extraordinary celebration that highlights the exceptional talents of young, gifted performing artists. Now in its sixth year, the event will take place at a stunning new venue, the state-of-the-art Epstein Family Amphitheater. This venue will provide the perfect setting for a captivating showcase of performances across a variety of artistic mediums, including dance, musical theater, mariachi, and a full award-winning student orchestra. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an exclusive VIP Champagne Reception, featuring a Broadway-style musical performance. At 6 p.m., all guests will join a welcome reception with delicious bites, cocktails, and a range of captivating musical performances. Enjoy intimate ensembles and full orchestra pieces, including performances by Mira Mesa High School Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble from Creative, Performing, and Media Arts Middle School, a Mariachi Ensemble from Bell Middle School, selections from Gypsy by Scripps Ranch High School, and student visual art displays from across San Diego. After the performances, the celebration will continue with dessert, coffee, and more music. Guests are encouraged to dress in colorful, creative attire to match the spirit of this vibrant evening. Beyond Brilliance is not only a showcase of the incredible artistic talents of student artists but also a vital fundraiser that supports the programs that make these creative opportunities possible.
