Alex G, stage alias of Alex Giannascoli, is a prolific singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who built his reputation combining strong melodic sensibilities with a ragged, impulsive-sounding performance style. Regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation, the release of Alex G’s ninth studio album in 2022, "God Save the Animals," was met with critical acclaim across the board, hailed as “a tour de force” (Rolling Stone) and “his most thrilling and playful record yet” (Vanity Fair). Most recently, Alex composed the original score for the A24 film "I Saw The TV Glow," continuing his work with director Jane Schoenbrun, who he previously collaborated with on the 2021 film "We’re All Going to the World’s Fair." At the center is vocalist Lexi Pulido, whose expressive voice and natural feel for the music bring elegance and soul to classic bossa nova and samba repertoire. Leading the ensemble on drums, Matthew Elton Smith brings a deep sense of groove and musical direction to the group, blending jazz sensibility with the subtle pulse and flow of Brazilian rhythms. His playing helps guide the ensemble while leaving space for the kind of spontaneous interaction that makes live jazz exciting. The band also features vibraphonist Ian Harland, whose shimmering sound and melodic improvisations add a unique color to the group. Guitarist Aaron Lind provides the harmonic foundation with the smooth, rhythmic feel that is central to Brazilian music, while bassist Harley Magsino anchors everything with warm tone, lyrical lines, and an effortless pocket. “Trial by Jury,” Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operetta, a gem rarely performed by major opera companies, returns to San Diego County for the first time since 2009 on April 25 & 26 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Escondido, courtesy of Genesis Opera Theatre. The 30-minute operetta in English is a fast-paced contemporary courtroom circus where love, law and public opinion collide in the most delightfully ridiculous ways. Imagine sharp suits, social-media-level drama, your favorite reality TV show, and a legal system that’s just as theatrical as the people in it. Gilbert & Sullivan’s signature wit, speed and musical charm are clever, chaotic and irresistibly fun. Genesis Opera Theatre production features an all-star cast of talent drawn from Southern California’s San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties, is directed by Patrick Anderson with musical director Abraham Fabella. “This fun production will be a new experience for most who attend. And those who know Gilbert & Sullivan’s repertoire will be thrilled with the accompanying concert of G&S favorites.
