In this workshop, students will learn basic knots and techniques to create a hexagon hanger wall hanging, perfect for any decor, whether you’re going for a boho chic look or simply just want to add some texture to your walls. Each student will leave with a finished wall hanging and ideas for their next macramé project! Materials provided.   • The VAPA Foundation, dedicated to enhancing access to arts education for San Diego students in grades K through 12, is thrilled to announce its annual Beyond Brilliance Gala, an extraordinary celebration that highlights the exceptional talents of young, gifted performing artists. Now in its sixth year, the event will take place at a stunning new venue, the state-of-the-art Epstein Family Amphitheater. This venue will provide the perfect setting for a captivating showcase of performances across a variety of artistic mediums, including dance, musical theater, mariachi, and a full award-winning student orchestra. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an exclusive VIP Champagne Reception, featuring a Broadway-style musical performance. At 6 p.m., all guests will join a welcome reception with delicious bites, cocktails, and a range of captivating musical performances. Enjoy intimate ensembles and full orchestra pieces, including performances by Mira Mesa High School Orchestra, the Jazz Ensemble from Creative, Performing, and Media Arts Middle School, a Mariachi Ensemble from Bell Middle School, selections from Gypsy by Scripps Ranch High School, and student visual art displays from across San Diego. After the performances, the celebration will continue with dessert, coffee, and more music. Guests are encouraged to dress in colorful, creative attire to match the spirit of this vibrant evening. Beyond Brilliance is not only a showcase of the incredible artistic talents of student artists but also a vital fundraiser that supports the programs that make these creative opportunities possible.   • Long-time Round Table member Carl Ingwalson has for many years been writing biographies of ordinary Civil War soldiers and their families. At this meeting, he will describe the experiences of the soldiers of the 21st Iowa Infantry Regiment. For example, we will hear of the difficulties of Arnold Allen in trying to confirm that his dependent mother received the money he had sent. When the regiment was in Missouri, George Purdy learned his wife and a daughter had died. David Drummond sought leave so he could get home in time to see his dying wife “one last time.” And Carl will review the regiment’s most noteworthy campaign at Vicksburg.   • “Shooting for the Stars,” a talk by Richard Danne of Danne & Blackburn fame focuses on Richard’s life and illustrious career in brand identity and communication design fostered by his guiding principle: “Create work that has beauty, simplicity, and permanence.” The presentation includes the story behind the rise, fall, and rebirth of the award-winning NASA “worm” logo design, now one of the world’s most recognized design programs. In addition to receiving three U.S. Presidential Awards for Design Excellence and NASA’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, the logo, along with its graphic standards manual, was recently placed into the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
