  • The annual lecture is intended to inspire students and provide insight into the career of an established artist working in media production. Kahlil Joseph is a Los Angeles–based filmmaker and visual artist whose work moves fluidly between cinema, contemporary art, and music. Known for his pioneering practice of “conceptual journalism,” he creates immersive, non-linear narratives that challenge traditional ideas of time, authorship, and the moving image. He is the creator of BLKNWS and the feature film "BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions," which expands his exploration of Black cultural production, memory, and global exchange. Joseph’s work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Venice Biennale, Tate Modern, and the New Museum. He co-founded the Underground Museum with his late brother, artist Noah Davis, as a space for radical community engagement with art. A partner in the editorial company Parallax, Joseph has also directed acclaimed short-form work across music and film. His practice continues to redefine the boundaries between art, media, and lived experience.

  • The closing celebration will include a performance by Matana Roberts (UC San Diego, Department of Music) followed by a discussion with Kamaal Martin (Art Power Equity) and Mashonda Tifrere (curator, ArtLeadHer). Spanning nearly five decades of artistic production, "Full Circle—The Teachings and Her Legacy" is a comprehensive examination of Faith Ringgold’s multidisciplinary practice. The exhibition brings together works created between 1976 and 2023, tracing the artist’s evolution across painting, textile art, and narrative assemblage. Born in Harlem in 1930, Ringgold emerged from the Black Arts Movement as a visionary force, boldly weaving autobiography, social and political activism, and deep reverence for her ancestors into every layer of her work. The exhibition is framed conceptually through Ringgold’s relationship to UC San Diego, where she served as professor of visual arts from 1984 to 2002. This institutional affiliation provides a lens for understanding how her academic philosophy materialized throughout her practice and impacted not only those she mentored at UC San Diego, but generations of artists around the world. • Join the Library Foundation SD at Library Shop Mission Hills for “Professor Patrick” Office Hours. Patrick Stewart, CEO of the Library Foundation SD, will share how to advocate for the San Diego Public Library and provide insight into the City’s proposed budget cuts. Recently, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria released his proposed City budget for Fiscal Year 2027, which will cut $6.3 million from the San Diego Public Library department, resulting in fewer operating hours, programs, and services at all 37 Library locations. “The Mayor’s draft budget devalues the priorities that San Diegans have long held important to their communities,” said Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD.“When public libraries are prioritized in communities, research shows that there are wide-ranging benefits from reduced crime, improved educational outcomes, and increased employment rates. This means that cuts to the San Diego Public Library are cuts to public safety, cuts to economic development, and cuts to youth success.” The FY2027 budget cuts will also impact the Library’s maintenance budget, limiting its ability to address more than $60 million in deferred maintenance needs. Last year, the $6.8 million cuts to the Library department resulted in closing all 37 Libraries on Sundays and closed 20 on Mondays. The San Diego Public Library system has experienced City budget challenges year after year. The Library Foundation plays a critical role in advocating for sustained investment in Library services and ensuring Libraries remain a priority within the city’s infrastructure. Library Foundation SD was established to support the mission of the San Diego Public Library system, helping San Diegans learn new skills, pursue lifelong goals, and improve their quality of life through access to resources, staff expertise, and community partnerships. With a vision rooted in equitable access to knowledge and opportunity, the Foundation works to ensure that libraries remain vital civic institutions at the heart of their communities. San Diegans can learn how to participate in this advocacy by learning more. Visit: https://libraryfoundationsd.org/shop Library Foundation SD on Instagram and Facebook
