Have you always wanted to tap dance? In our tap class, taught by Lindy Lyon, we will work on the fundamentals of tap dance in the feet and in the body. Each week, students will build on the skills learned the previous week as we broaden our step vocabulary. Students will also learn about major figures and influences in tap dance history. Students will hone their tap skills with an emphasis on musicality, technique, and playfulness as they learn a dance. The Level 1 tap class is a great opportunity for beginners and returning tap dancers alike. Step into a world of color, movement, and imagination with "El Alebrije," A Step Beyond’s vibrant reimagining of "The Nutcracker" through dance, theater, music, and puppetry — taking place November 7 & 8 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. This original production features over 150 youth performers (ages 8–18), a student-run technical crew, guest parent performers, and breathtaking storytelling and puppetry in collaboration with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Bocón Youth Arts. The story follows María, a young girl celebrating her Quinceañera, who receives a mystical Alebrije and is whisked into a magical dream journey across Mexico. Along the way, she encounters imagery inspired by Día de los Muertos, Frida Kahlo, and mariachi traditions—discovering the power of connection, heritage, and love. "El Alebrije" is more than a performance; it’s a community celebration. Last year’s production drew over 1,000 attendees across three shows, uniting families, volunteers, and artists in a dazzling display of creativity and collaboration. This new program, held on the first Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m., is designed to introduce children to the magic of storytelling while fostering an early love for music, art, and literature. Geared for ages 2–5, Creative Storytime is a free, interactive experience featuring songs and stories that celebrate creativity and imagination. After the program, families are invited to stay and explore the Athenaeum’s extraordinary children’s collection, a treasure trove of books on music and art. This collection highlights the library’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of readers and creators. About Ms. Katia Creative Storytime will be led by Katia Graham, a passionate librarian, storyteller, and advocate for literacy. Based in San Diego, Graham brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the Athenaeum. She is a member of the Freedom to Read Statement Taskforce for the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association and has served as Youth Services Librarian at La Jolla/Riford Public Library and Children’s Librarian at Coronado Public Library. Graham is the founder of Librarian on the Go, an initiative dedicated to promoting literacy and information access. She has a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Southern California, a second master’s in broadcast journalism from Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College. A former reporter, Graham honed her storytelling skills in newsrooms, including KYMA, NY1 News, and ABC World News Tonight. In addition to her other programs, she proudly leads a bilingual storytime and developed San Diego Public Library's initiative to combat the Spanish disinformation crisis. Exhibit on view November 10 - December 16. Responding to issues affecting our region, our Fall 2025 Museum Studies class has juried, curated, and installed "Reimagining La Linea", an exhibition about migration which highlights the work of thirty artists and two collectives. Migration has been a vital force in the shaping our country, and the San Diego/Tijuana region clearly exemplifies this: a diverse community alive with layered cultures, languages, and traditions from all around the globe. The border wall or “La Linea,” intended as an impenetrable boundary, also reveals itself as porous, with the highest number of lawful daily crossings of any other US port of entry. The artwork bears witness to the human condition at the border as well as to the journeys and dreams carried across it. The exhibition challenged artists to imagine an alternative future where boundaries are fluid sites of connection rather than division. The exhibit transforms the gallery into a space of empathy and imagination, where borders that divide us become bridges that connect us.
