OTC at the Brooks presents a screening of "Shredding: A New Lens in Surf Filmmaking" on Friday, July 25 at 8 p.m. at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater (217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA)! "Shredding" is a powerful short surf film program that challenges outdated stereotypes about who belongs in surf culture. From Morocco to Palestine to the California coast, these films spotlight surfers whose presence on the water redefines what it means to “shred.” Through stories of access, identity, and resilience, "Shredding" celebrates a new wave of surfers expanding the sport’s image—and invites audiences to reimagine surf culture as a space of joy, freedom, and connection. This special screening features work by filmmakers Rabbi Chel Mandell, Lo Frentz, Serra Soyupak, Peter Williams, Dörthe Eickelberg, Nesrine Majzoub, Zachary Zezima, Yusuf Demirörs, and Arne JinAn Wong. Nearly 40% of state residents surveyed said they know someone whose mental health has worsened as a result of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. One in five people indicated that they know someone who is afraid to seek medical care because of immigration activity.

This exhibition will explore art that has emerged from the surf-culture lifestyle and surfing’s influence on artists. Everyone who has experienced the feeling of riding a wave understands just how hard it is to describe that incredible sensation, referred to as “stoke”. It seems that only through creative self-expression can surfer-artists capture the essence of stoke and the inspiration that can be found between the surfer and the wave. Artists who surf may take this creative energy in many directions and may explore subjects outside of surfing and surf culture. This joint exhibition will feature a variety of media, from traditional art making methods to works in resin, murals, surfboards, graphic art, sculpture, or fabric, all with the goal to convey the creative power that all artists experience, on or off the wave.
