The Old Globe is thrilled to announce its 90th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, an unforgettable evening under the stars on the Globe’s Copley Plaza and on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Sheryl White and Jennifer Greenfield will serve as the Celebration Co-Chairs for this one-night-only fundraising event, which honors 90 years of theatre that lives beyond the stage, with Darlene Marcos Shiley as the Honorary Chair. Guests will experience an incredible evening, complete with exquisite dining, craft cocktails, and live entertainment, featuring an electrifying performance by Tony Award-nominated actor and Grammy and Emmy Award-winning songwriter/composer Christopher Jackson. Best known for his portrayal of George Washington in the critically acclaimed Broadway sensation "Hamilton." This black-tie event begins at 5:30 p.m. with signature cocktails by Snake Oil Cocktail Company and hors d’oeuvres on the Globe’s Copley Plaza. At 6:30 p.m. inside the Old Globe Theatre, Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein will lead a special 90th Anniversary Celebration presentation highlighting the Globe’s mission and its impact on the community, followed by a special and exclusive performance by Christopher Jackson. The evening continues with a sumptuous three-course alfresco dinner catered by Urban Kitchen Catering at 8 p.m. and concludes with live music, dancing, and surprises under the stars. Children will explore diverse art forms and dance styles from different cultures, learning about the rich traditions and history behind them. From the vibrant colors of Mexican folk art to the energetic rhythms of African dance, students will have the opportunity to create their own artwork, try new dance moves, and discover how art and dance connect people across the globe. Students will showcase their artwork and dance skills in a short performance on the final day of class. In this class, Jeff teaches how to efficiently begin and complete a painting. He says, “I focus on a purposeful approach to moving through blocking in an underpainting and understanding how to finish it without overworking. We try to work loose and quickly, so the process of painting is enjoyable.” Materials: Paint: (I like Winsor & Newton) Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light (or Pale Hue), Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White. Brushes: #2, #4, #6 (flats). I recommend Robert Simmons Signet brand. Supports: Canvas panels (buy bundle of five for the best price). For class we will be working in small format, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”. (Please no larger than 12” x 16”.) Other: palette (disposable paper palette is fine); odorless mineral spirits in solvent tank or small tight lid jar; small metal palette knife. SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego River Artists’ Alliance (SDRAA) will exhibit work celebrating the San Diego River and its ecosystem in a exhibition titled “Ebb and Flow: Art Along the River” at the Point Loma Public Library October 3 - December 30, 2024. - 4 p.m. A portion of the sales will be donated to the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF). SDRAA is a collective of twenty-two visual and 3D artists from around San Diego County who hike and spend time along the San Diego River from its source in mountains near Julian to the ocean. The artists create artwork about the San Diego River and its ecosystem to celebrate its history, beauty and promise and to encourage the public to connect with the variety of experiences available along the river. This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents.
