The Six String Society’s Celestial Sirens production is ready to dazzle Oceanside on Sept. 7 with several of San Diego’s most celebrated performers! This eclectic show, set in a “Living Room,” mixes some playful theater along with music ranging from soul, blues, and jazz all hosted by Sir Robert Parker. As the show unfolds, each of the Sirens take the stage to perform their own unique style of music featuring the electric Whitney Shay, (a four-time San Diego Music Award winner and Performer of the Year in 2019) who will light up the night’s sky with her powerful, soulful voice and her fun loving personality. We are also very excited to bring in San Diego Jazz icon Rebecca Jade making her long awaited Six String Society debut. For years she has toured the world with international stars including Sheila E, Dave Koz, and Elton John, but on Sept. 7th she will share the stage with Whitney and Taryn for the very first time! Over the years Jade has won multiple San Diego Music Awards including ‘Song of the Year’ in 2021 and Performer of the Year in 2020! Also, in the mix will be two-time San Diego Music Award winner Taryn Donath! She’s a true force on piano ranging from jazz to soul! Talk about a show stopper! Like all Six String Society productions there will be other special guests along with their collaborative All Star jam in the show’s finale. Ted Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, spent his life pushing open the doors of conventional thought, ushering in new directions and ideas, and always looking “through the wrong end of the telescope.” His wife, Audrey, continued that vision as she guided Ted’s legacy across the nearly 30 years following his passing. Such stewardship included the formation of The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection, allowing the world its first chance to see images Ted had made privately yet never shared with the general public. The works included in this exhibition are not only an inspired tribute to Ted and Audrey’s vision, but to those of us who also believe life is better when viewed through the wrong end of the telescope. In homage to this unique perspective, select works in this exhibition include rare examples signed by Audrey Geisel. "25 Year s Through The Wrong End of The Telescope" offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of this celebrated American icon and chronicles almost seven decades of work that, in every respect, is uniquely, stylistically, and endearingly Seussian. Let's move away from the disposable cup and make something that lasts. In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn hand-building techniques—pinch, coil, and slab—to create functional drinking vessels. We will give special attention to coffee cups to encourage students to enhance their own morning coffee rituals; however, any favorite beverage will fit. We will learn to handbuild: mugs (cups with handles) tumblers (cups without handles) espresso cups matching saucers matcha bowls pour over coffee drippers While this is a beginner-friendly course, intermediate and advanced students may join. Students will learn how to: Wedge clay Roll out slabs using a rolling pin and wooden guides Utilize hand-building techniques for form and function Use templates Compress & strengthen clay to reduce air bubbles, cracks, and warping during the drying process Make handles Trim and carve into leather hard clay Apply decoration and texture Glaze vessels and reduce mishaps Materials: Clay will be provided. Please purchase a standard-size rolling pin and beginner’s pottery tool kit. Tools can be purchased locally at Freeform Ceramics in National City. We will also learn how to improvise tools with common household items. Please bring a notebook / sketchbook to class to keep track of wonderful ideas.
