Want to learn how to use a sewing machine? How about mending an old piece of clothing? Join our sewing 101/102 class to learn the basics of sewing and working with textiles in a low-stress environment. In this workshop, you can get acquainted with the mechanics of a sewing machine, learn mending techniques, and learn how to create basic forms like a quilt square, tote bag, or stuffed sculpture. Exhibition runs March 24 - April 24, 2025. Join us for a conversation with artists Jennifer Anne Bennett and Jeanne Dunn. In the gallery, their large-scale canvases envelop us with the omnipresent beauty of Nature. Bennett’s animated brushstrokes and sumptuous color-washes coax luminous landscapes into being. Inspired by the healing experience of Japanese "forest-baths" (shinrin-yoku), Dunn paints a sensual arboreal space using vibrant hues and quasi-representational forms. Free and open to the public. Coffee with Kafka and the UCSD German Studies Program present a free screening of "The Glory of Life," the award-winning film about the surprising love affair between the literary genius Franz Kafka and his last love, Dora Diamant, in the last year of his life. The film is open to the public and will be screened on the UCSD campus at the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UCSD. "The Glory of Life" premiered in 2024 in Berlin and has been nominated for three national German Film Awards. Our after-school art classes nurture artistic growth through more advanced exploration of color theory, composition, and techniques. Young artists will enhance their skills in painting, drawing, and mixed media, focusing on developing their unique style and creative problem-solving. Parents are welcome to drop off their child for class or stay in the room during the hour while students create. "Border Craft" is a group exhibition featuring contemporary artists employing craft practices to address the geopolitical realities of borderland regions, including San Diego–Tijuana. The works on view, along with a series of accompanying public programs, serve as a feminist and critical counterpoint to dehumanizing systems designed to divide people and cultures. This event coincides with the Graduate Open Studios at the Visual Arts Facility. Open Studios will feature MFA and PhD artists’ open studios, exhibitions, screenings, and publications produced in the Department of Visual Arts.
